ABOUT ABOUT

Vermicomposting is the practice of using worms to break down foods scraps, resulting in a mix of worm castings and decomposed foods craps that have several uses. It restores naturally occuring microbes in the soil, increases plants disease resistance, promotes growth and keeps food waste out of landfills.

Ericka Kay, UCCE Master Gardener, will go over the basics of constructing and maintaining a worm bin for composting food scraps, how to harvest the castings and beneficial uses for castings in home gardens, including how to make compost tea.

Ericka is a Truckee resident who has enjoyed gardening for ten years. She is a recent graduate of UNR and the University of California Cooperative Extension's Master Gardener training as well as the Truckee Demonstration Garden Intern. Her interests include Agro-Ecology, Integrated Pest Management and Food Sovereignty.
