HOW TO BUILD A CRITTER PROOF GARDEN BED: A Slow Food Lake Tahoe + Truckee Roundhouse Collaboration
Our lidded bed design proved successful for growing food in the Truckee Demonstration Garden last season. So we want to share the design and concept with you in an effort to increase the number of successful, food producing gardens in the Truckee/Tahoe area.
During this interactive workshop, you will be led through some basic safety precautions and carpentry skills, then have an opportunity to build and take home your own raised bed. This workshop is an excellent choice for beginner level gardeners. You will learn about selecting the right building materials, cutting wood using Miter saws, Jigsaws, and hand saws, sanders and different sand papers, fasteners and drills and more!
Setting up a garden can be hard work and this is a hands-on workshop. Participants should expect to work hard and get messy. All parts will be assembled on site, with final assembly at home (video instructions will be available to use later).
No experience necessary! You will learn how to use all the necessary power tools and then be approved for their use at the Truckee Roundhouse. Workshop participants will also be given ONE FREE day to work at the Roundhouse! With enrollment in our Bed-Building workshop, you are also invited to attend our Organic Gardening 101 Workshop the following day FOR FREE.
Thanks to a partnership with Truckee Tahoe Lumber, we will source all materials needed for whichever design you choose to build at a discount (this is reflected in the materials fees listed for each design type). Every participants must select the $75 class fee as well as whichever lid or bed they wish to build. We will be purchasing all materials for you in advance.
